Diwali Diyas

Diwali is the ‘Festival of Lights’ and hundreds of diyas are used to decorate the homes. Baked mud diyas are considered as the more holy and auspicious and these diyas will decorate the homes on the night of Diwali. The lamps are placed particularly in front of the idols or photographs of gods and goddesses to offer prayers. Diyas are normally a small earthen lamp lit on Diwali and they are made of clay. To light these diyas, ghee or oil is used as fuel and cotton wool as the wick of the lamp.

Kids will also make diyas using air dried clay or play dough but these diyas should not be lit using ghee or cotton wool because of safety reasons. You can use beautifully crafted diyas which can catch the attention. Earthen diyas used during Diwali has an ancient design sense and is simple and stunning in its style and has a universal appeal. During Diwali season you can see a wide variety of creativity in diyas ranging from agals to designer diyas which are displayed in art and craft boutiques.

You can see variety of diyas in shops and the lamps created by ceramic designer. You will also get diyas decorated with zari and mirror in exuberant colors. There are brilliantly created diyas with sharp cut edges decorated with cut work which are covered and filled with bright color wax.  There are traditional diyas with mirror work and zari embroidered deep. There are diyas which are also embroidered with dried flowers, Ganesha and Lakshmi diyas with 21 or 11 spouts, china leaf shaped diyas, shaded rose shaped, small Parvati Ganesha lamps and many other designer diyas which attracts the attention of people. You will also get well crafted diyas in shades of yellow, blue, gold, silver and pink.

Diyas can also be made of metals and blue pottery. But clay diyas have special significance because they are preferred in all the holy rituals and worship of Gods and Goddesses. These clay diyas are in demand during diwali. You can paint special Diwali motifs and can paint different shades of single color on the diyas. The most modern type of diyas is electric diyas of different shapes and sizes.

The legend associated with the lighting of Diyas is that the Diwali Diyas are lit in order to welcome Lord Rama after fourteen years of exile. The victory of Lord Rama over Ravana symbolizes the victory of good over evil and people welcomed him back to his kingdom by lighting clay lamps in rows and since then Diwali is celebrated with the lighting of diyas. Many people float diyas on river in order to pay tribute to their ancestors and also as a mark of respect for the deities.

Diwali Diyas symbolizes the goodness, virtuosity and eternal truth. Light is the symbol of knowledge, goodness, happiness, wisdom, prosperity, truth and peace for Hindus. Diyas enlightens the physical path as well as the spiritual path of human beings. So Deepavali Diyas not only illuminate the household but also the minds of people.
